Trick or Trunks are a great way for the community to celebrate October, and a way for the students to get involved. The Future Child Advocates gives the student organizations of Central Michigan University a chance to connect to the community and the kids within in it.
The CMU branch of FCA has sponsored a Trick or Trunk on campus for the past few years. During the event RSOs decorate their cars and hand out candy to children. The kids and their families can also participate in other activities they offer, such as face painting, pumpkin tic tac toe, and toilet paper bowling.

For several of the members of the participating RSOs, it was their first year, and they were already enjoying the festivities. “We like dressing up, and we like the kids,” says the members of SGA.

FCA is an organization that offers support and brings awareness to bully, abuse, and other hardships a child my face. They want kids to know that whatever they are going through, they are not alone. Bringing the community and campus together for a time that is memorable and fun for kids tells them that there is a whole community looking out for them.

The Midland Brewing Company’s Ocktoberfest celebration is much smaller the original festival, but has the heart and energy of it. Residents of Midland and other surrounding towns come to enjoy live music, craft beers, and fresh food. The staff even dress up in traditional German clothes, and beer was served in boot shaped mugs.
Everyone, from children to elders, enjoyed the time they spent there. You could eat on the patio area, or buy a drink and sit in the outside areas, either by the fire place or under the tent. The staff could deliver your drinks while you enjoyed the show.
I learned that it is not as easy to go and shoot pictures and expect all of them to turn out good or interesting. A lot of that is on me. Patience and observation is key if I want to find a good photo. I learned that through the second photo.

While Neal Primm and Jarrod Fish are experienced in drag performance, they have always wanted direct their own shows. Planet of Hazze Productions and The Spring Chix show-their first directed performance- is the product is the their ambitions and talent.
It hasn’t been an easy road for them. Both of them had trouble getting booked for shows in the area. “We’re just so flustered and angry,” Primm recalled. “I cried. I shaking… I just feel like I’m not good enough.” Pushed by anger, they decided to go full in on their dream.
This is also the first show that Primm and Fish are hosting and performing together. They are best friends and Primm is Fisher’s “drag mother”. They have performed at other venues and other performances before in Saginaw, Kalamazoo, and other places, but the were very excited to perform and host together in their community.
“It turned into a whole thing and it was really neat,” Jarrod said. “Were just like texting about it one day and now were here with our show ready and and in order, with all these people here and its really cool.”
The day they resolved to to make their company a reality, they began preparing and searching. They had the equipment, resources, and talent. All they needed was a venue and more queens to perform with them.
Their first goal was to have a performance in Mount Pleasant. While Mount Pleasant has had drag shows in the past, many of the drag queens weren’t local. Wanting to give local and ametur drag queens a chance, Primm and Fish decided they were going to have a show in Mount Pleasant, and they were going to have local drag queens perform in a local venue. When they found Centennial Hall, the owner was very excited about the idea and wanted to be a part of it.

Another major point of the show was charity. While the performances processes of a show are sensationalized, many drag shows donate profits to charity. At The Spring Chix, donations went to AIDS/HIV research, and the audience members were encouraged to bring clothes, accessories, and make-up to donate to those who are transitioning.
Since being booked, Primm and Fish are coming up with all sorts of new ideas for shows. “Honestly, a little anger pushed us a little bit to make us be like ‘Dude, we need to make this happen.”
As soon as things seemed fall apart for these two queens, everything came back together to give a grand performance.

Art can be a great way to express not only your love of creation, but your other passions. Sienna Rogers is an excellent example of such.
